Not achieving liberation with ascetic way, Siddhartha renounce this practice. Assuming that he went to the extreme of ascetic doctrines and ascetics that did not lead to enlightenment, Siddhartha sought another method, and recalled a childhood experience while sitting under the root. plum tree:

I died like this ...'. This  knowledge (sa vidyā , pi.  Vijjā ) is the first we have achieved in the first watch ...
Then we focus on the birth and passing away of sentient beings. With the eyes of the gods, innocence, transcendence, beyond human limitations, we see that beings are formed and destroyed, ... beings are regenerated by karma. We realize that 'sentient beings who create akusala kamma through threefoldness - body, speech, mind - are sunk after death, rebirth in the land, hell. The beings who produce good karma - body, speech, and mind - are reborn in kusala, after death are on the heaven '... This second understanding has been achieved in the second.
Then we focus awareness on the destruction of pirated or (sa.  Asrava , pi.  Asava ) and recognized as true: 'This is suffering, this is the cause of suffering, this is the cessation of suffering, this is the way To eliminate suffering, 'and when one realizes this, one's mind escapes from desire, from the desire to exist, to escape from ignorance. I understand the truth 'Regeneration we have, my life is completed, I have completed what to do. This life (suffering) we have overcome '... This third understanding we have achieved in the third ... ".
